Do you have a goal? Are you a goal setter? Or maybe you are more of a to-do list maker. I have a confession to make. I never really took goal setting serious. Oh sure there were things I wanted to do and to accomplish. But I rarely wrote them down as goals. I did not make a plan of action to reach the things I wanted. I was more of a live in the moment, make your daily to-do list, appreciate what you have now and fantasize about how you want the future to be kind of girl.
And truthfully, I don’t see anything wrong with that. It is important to live in the present and appreciate what you have. I also enjoy having an active imagination and dream about the life I want and things I would like to do. But beware of drifting in the flow of this type of living.
The danger of living between the state of appreciating the now and longing for the future, is that my life was not satisfying or fulfilling. I never felt like my dreams would ever come to pass. I was overwhelmed and frustrated. The dream looked to big to accomplish.
When this happens what do you do? Do you give up? Or maybe you are you are like me and decide to start living the life you were created to live.
To overcome the urge to quit on your dream, you need to break it down into manageable steps. First, write the goal down. I kept my goal in the form of a dream in my mind. I didn’t write it down. If I did jot it down, it was a simple phrase or word such as, I want to move. Then I would end up throwing away the paper or envelop I wrote it on.
So let us say you are a single person living in a big house on an acre lot that is hard to manage. You have no family near by as they live in another state. You want to move to be near your support system. Instead of writing your goal as I want to move, you need to be more specific. I want to move to a one bedroom house in Denver. The house should have a small yard, patio and be near shopping and medical offices. I can afford _____.
Once you have written your goal down, put it in a place that you will see it every day. By making it visible and reading it often, you will start thinking of ways to achieve your goal. You start to develop an action plan.
So in the above scenario your action plan might look some thing like this:
- Choose move date.
- Contact realtor and put house on market.
- Go online and check housing in Denver.
- Check with family about housing.
- Sort belongs to move, sell and donate.
- Have garage sale.
- Find help with move.
- Get packing materials.
- Rent moving vehicle.
- Connect utilities in new house.
- Arrange disconnection of utilities in old house.
Finally start taking steps on your action plan. Every day ask yourself, what can I do today to bring me closer to my goal? Then do it. You must become intentional with your life or you will drift through life not fulfilling all that life has for you.
